About Biosphere

Biosphere is the ambient electronic project of Geir Jenssen, a Norwegian musician hailing from Tromsø, more than 500 miles above the Arctic Circle. Jenssen initially gained recognition as a founding member of the quasi-new age trio Bel Canto, with whom he recorded two albums before embarking on a solo career. His solo work began under the name Bleep, releasing singles and the influential album "The North Pole by Submarine" (1990), a pioneering effort that helped shape the ambient techno genre by merging experimental soundscapes inspired by Brian Eno and Jon Hassell with the rhythms of techno and acid house.

Adopting the Biosphere moniker, Jenssen released "Microgravity" (1991) on Norway’s Origo Sound, which later saw international distribution via Apollo Records. Throughout the 1990s, Biosphere gained momentum with acclaimed albums such as "Patashnik" (1994), featuring the track "Novelty Waves," widely recognized after its use in a Levi’s commercial, and the critically revered ambient masterpiece "Substrata" (1997). Collaborations with fellow ambient artists like Pete Namlook, Higher Intelligence Agency, and Deathprod further highlighted his innovative approach.

In the 2000s, Jenssen continued to evolve his sound with thoughtful releases on Touch Records, including "Cirque" (2000), the Debussy-inspired "Shenzhou" (2002), and "Dropsonde" (2006). His concept album "N-Plants" (2011) explored themes related to nuclear power. More recently, Biosphere has released works such as "Departed Glories" (2016) and the film-inspired "The Petrified Forest" (2017) through Smalltown Supersound, solidifying his legacy as a trailblazer in ambient electronic music known for immersive soundscapes that blend serene atmospheres with subtle rhythmic elements.
