About Steve Ignorant

Steve Ignorant, born Steven Williams in 1957 in the East London area of Barking (occasionally cited as nearby Dagenham), is a pivotal figure in the history of British anarcho-punk. Best known as a co-founder and the lead vocalist of the groundbreaking punk band Crass, Ignorant helped define the late 1970s and early 1980s UK punk movement with his fiercely political lyrics and uncompromising activism. Crass became synonymous with anti-establishment ideals, marrying abrasive, confrontational music with messages against war, capitalism, fascism, and consumerism. This blend of raw sound and pointed social critique established the band as a countercultural icon.

Following his influential tenure with Crass, Steve Ignorant embarked on a diverse solo career that spans punk, spoken word, and folk, reflecting his artistic versatility and continued commitment to anarchist principles. Throughout his career, he has maintained a passionate dedication to social activism, often addressing urgent issues like human rights and anti-fascism. Ignorant’s collaborations with various artists and projects have helped sustain his relevance in the evolving music landscape while inspiring new generations drawn to punk’s rebellious spirit. His enduring presence in live performances and his role as a cultural provocateur affirm Steve Ignorant as a timeless voice of resistance within and beyond the punk scene.
