About Alice Faye

Alice Faye, born Alice Leppert on May 5, 1915, in New York City, rose to prominence as one of Hollywood’s most enchanting musical stars during the 1930s and 1940s. Launching her career at just 14, she first captured audiences as a chorus girl in the Broadway revue *George White's Scandals* (1931). Her exceptional singing talent caught the attention of bandleader Rudy Vallée, who recruited her for his touring band. When the stage show was adapted into film, Vallée championed Faye for the lead role, catapulting her into Hollywood stardom as a platinum blonde reminiscent of Jean Harlow.

Alice Faye became synonymous with classic screen musicals, starring in notable films such as *On the Avenue* (1937), *Alexander's Ragtime Band* (1938), and *In Old Chicago* (1938). Alongside her film success, she was a popular radio personality, further solidifying her status as a beloved entertainer. Despite her popularity, creative tensions with 20th Century Fox chief Darryl F. Zanuck in the early 1940s curtailed her film career, paving the way for Betty Grable’s rise as Fox’s leading musical star. After her acclaimed role in *Fallen Angel* (1945), Faye largely withdrew from movies, returning briefly for *State Fair* (1962). She subsequently focused on Broadway and touring performances before passing away in 1998. Alice Faye’s enduring legacy remains rooted in her captivating voice and memorable contributions to Hollywood’s golden age of musicals.
