About Ben E. King

Ben E. King, born Benjamin Earl Nelson in Henderson, North Carolina, in 1938, emerged as one of the most influential voices in R&B and soul music. After relocating with his family to Harlem in 1947, King began shaping his vocal talents through church choirs and street-corner doo-wop groups like the Four B's and the Five Crowns. His breakthrough came in 1958 when the Five Crowns were hired to replace the original Drifters lineup, a transition orchestrated by manager George Treadwell. As lead singer of the reformed Drifters, King lent his smooth baritone to classics such as "There Goes My Baby," "This Magic Moment," and "Save the Last Dance for Me," helping to define a sophisticated uptown soul sound that influenced the burgeoning Motown era.

Launching his solo career in 1960 under the stage name Ben E. King, he quickly found success with hits like the Latin-tinged "Spanish Harlem" (1961). However, it was the heartfelt anthem "Stand by Me," co-written by King, that solidified his legacy. This timeless track not only reached the pop Top Five but enjoyed a resurgence in popularity with its 1986 film namesake. Throughout the 1960s, King maintained his appeal with songs like "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)" and "I (Who Have Nothing)," despite setbacks during the British Invasion.

King’s versatility shone through a disco-influenced comeback in 1975 with "Supernatural Thing, Pt. I," and his collaborations with artists such as the Average White Band. In his later years, he explored jazz with albums like *Shades of Blue* (1999) and *Heart & Soul* (2010), while dedicating himself to charitable work through the Stand by Me Foundation. Ben E. King’s enduring melodies and elegant style left an indelible mark on popular music until his passing in 2015.
