About Sonex

Sonex is a dynamic musical ensemble that originated over fifteen years ago in Xalapa, Mexico, founded by four dedicated musicians intent on revitalizing the Son Jarocho tradition. Rooted deeply in the folkloric heritage of the Sotavento region, Sonex masterfully combines the vibrant dances, verses, and rhythms of this ancient style with contemporary sounds and genres, crafting a fresh and innovative fusion that resonates both locally and globally.

Across three acclaimed albums, Sonex has collaborated with a diverse array of renowned artists including Jorge Pardo, Rubén Albarrán, Ojos de Brujo, Panagiotis Andreou, Ilan Bar-Lavi, Shelly Tzarafi, and Bocafloja. Their unique approach to Mexican folk music has led them to share stages worldwide—in Mexico, the United States, Chile, Germany, Russia, Haiti, and Israel—while also contributing to projects with celebrated musicians such as Antonio Sánchez and Alejandro Sanz.

This inventive blend of tradition and modernity has not gone unnoticed. Sonex has earned prestigious accolades like the LUKAS Award for Best Emerging International Band, the IMAS Award for Best Folklore Album, and first place in National Geographic Channel’s "Tu música también cuenta" competition. Through these achievements, Sonex stands as a vital ambassador of Mexican musical culture, continuously pushing the boundaries of Son Jarocho and Latin music at large.
