About Xutos & Pontapés

Xutos & Pontapés stands as a cornerstone of Portuguese rock, having shaped the country’s music scene since their formation in 1978. Founded by guitarist Zé Pedro, drummer Kalú, vocalist Zé Leonel, and bassist Tim, the band quickly captured audiences with their raw rock & roll energy and catchy melodies. After Leonel’s departure in 1981, Tim stepped up as lead vocalist, while guitarist Francis briefly joined before being replaced by João Cabeleira in 1983. Their commercial breakthrough began with the release of the single "Semen" (1981), paving the way for their debut album "Xutos & Pontapés 78-82" (1982).

Throughout the 1980s and beyond, Xutos & Pontapés solidified their reputation with albums like "Cerco" (1985), "Circo de Feras" (1987), and "Gritos Mudos" (1990). Renowned for their passionate live performances, they built a loyal fanbase not only across Portugal but also in neighboring Spanish-speaking countries. Milestone celebrations, such as their 20th anniversary, were immortalized through live recordings like "1º de Agosto" (1999), recorded at Lisbon’s iconic Rock Rendez-Vous club. With a career spanning over four decades, Xutos & Pontapés continues to exemplify authentic Portuguese rock, blending vigorous stage presence with memorable songwriting that has earned them a lasting place in the nation’s musical heritage.
