About Maria Callas

Maria Callas, born Maria Anne Sofia Cecilia Kalogeropoulos in New York City to Greek parents, remains one of the most legendary and transformative figures in opera history. Amid the economic hardships of the Great Depression, she relocated with her mother to Greece at age thirteen, where she studied under the esteemed Spanish soprano Elvira de Hidalgo at the Royal Academy of Music in Athens. Callas made her professional debut at sixteen in von Suppé’s operetta "Boccaccio," but her international breakthrough came in 1947 with her portrayal of La Gioconda in Verona.

Renowned for her extraordinary vocal range—spanning from the high E to an F below middle C—Callas was celebrated not only for her technical mastery but also for her dramatic intensity and emotional depth. Early in her career, she astonished critics by seamlessly performing diverse roles, from Wagnerian heroines like Brünnhilde to bel canto icons such as Bellini’s Elvira, often within the same week. As her career evolved, she focused on a core repertoire featuring masterpieces like Cherubini’s "Medea," Bellini’s "Norma" and "La Sonnambula," Puccini’s "Tosca," and Donizetti’s "Anna Bolena."

Her collaborations with conductor Tullio Serafin proved pivotal in shaping her artistry. After retiring from the stage following a final appearance as Norma in Paris in 1965, Callas contributed to the next generation through masterclasses at Juilliard in 1971 and a brief touring partnership with tenor Giuseppe di Stefano in 1973. Her vast discography remains essential to opera enthusiasts worldwide. In 2018, innovative technology revived her presence in "Callas in Concert," reaffirming her timeless influence on classical music and popular culture alike.
