About Elliott Smith

Elliott Smith, born Stephen Paul Smith in 1969 in Omaha, Nebraska, was a seminal figure in 1990s indie music, known for his haunting melodies and introspective lyrics. Raised primarily in Texas, he moved to Portland, Oregon, at age 14, where he developed his introspective songwriting style. After studying philosophy and political science, Smith co-founded the indie rock band Heatmiser, releasing albums such as "Dead Air" (1993) and "Cop and Speeder" (1994) before the group disbanded in 1996.

Smith’s solo career took off with the home-recorded, acoustic debut "Roman Candle" (1994), followed by the critically acclaimed "Elliott Smith" (1995) and "Either/Or" (1997), albums that highlighted his signature whispered vocals and emotional vulnerability. His sound evolved with the richer production of "XO" (1998) and "Figure 8" (2000), albums noted for their lush arrangements reminiscent of the Beatles.

Mainstream recognition came after director Gus Van Sant included his music in the film "Good Will Hunting," with Smith’s song "Miss Misery" earning an Academy Award nomination. Tragically, Smith died in 2003 at age 34 under mysterious circumstances. Posthumously, his unfinished work was completed and released as "From a Basement on the Hill" (2004), his highest-charting album. Elliott Smith’s legacy endures through his deeply personal songwriting, influencing generations of indie and alternative musicians worldwide.
