About ABC

ABC is a seminal British new wave band that emerged from Sheffield in 1980, fronted by the charismatic vocalist Martin Fry. Originally connected through Fry’s fanzine, Modern Drugs, and an early collaboration with Vice Versa members Mark White and Stephen Singleton, ABC quickly forged a stylish, synth-driven dance-pop sound marked by a theatrical edge. Drawing inspiration from glam icons like David Bowie and Roxy Music, they crafted a distinctive blend of sophisticated pop and camp flair.

Their breakthrough arrived with the 1982 debut album "The Lexicon of Love," which topped the U.K. charts and delivered hit singles such as "Poison Arrow," "The Look of Love," and "All of My Heart." This record’s success soared internationally thanks in part to heavy MTV rotation, pushing singles like "The Look of Love" and "Poison Arrow" into the American Top 25. Despite lineup changes and a shift to a rockier tone on their sophomore effort, "Beauty Stab" (1983), ABC struggled to maintain this commercial momentum.

Reinventing themselves with the colorful and catchy "How to Be a... Zillionaire!" (1985), the band regained popularity, notably with "Be Near Me," their first American Top Ten hit. After overcoming health challenges and intermittent hiatuses, ABC returned with "Alphabet City" (1987), featuring the U.S. Top Five single "When Smokey Sings." Their late 1990s and 2000s resurgence, plus deluxe reissues and live celebrations of their debut, cemented their enduring legacy. The release of "Lexicon of Love II" (2016) showcased Martin Fry’s timeless voice and songwriting, confirming ABC’s lasting influence on synth-pop culture.
