About the pillows

Emerging from Hokkaido in 1989, the Japanese alternative rock trio the pillows forged a distinctive sound that set them apart from their grunge-heavy Tokyo peers. Drawing inspiration from melodic folk-rock icons like Simon & Garfunkel and legendary British acts such as the Beatles and the Jam, the pillows crafted a more accessible and refined style that resonated deeply with fans. Their debut album, "Moon Gold" (1991), introduced their melodic approach, but it was the 1996 single "Strange Chameleon" and the 1997 album "Please Mr. Lost Man" that firmly established their presence in Japan’s music scene.

Signing with King Records enabled broader opportunities, including international performances in London. However, the pillows achieved global recognition through their complete soundtrack for the cult anime series FLCL (2000), notably with the memorable closing track "Ride a Shooting Star." This exposure brought the band to new audiences worldwide, especially in the United States. Their first American shows took place in 2005 at South by Southwest and later at a major anime convention in Chicago, performing before thousands of enthusiastic fans.

Throughout the 2000s, albums like "My Foot" (2006) and domestic releases such as "Wake Up! Wake Up! Wake Up!" (2007) and "Pied Piper" (2008) on Avex Trax solidified their reputation for energetic live performances and enduring influence. Today, the pillows remain a beloved and vital force in Japanese alternative rock, celebrated for their timeless melodies and lasting impact on both domestic and international listeners.
