About Takuya Kuroda

Takuya Kuroda, born in 1980 in Kobe, Japan, is a visionary jazz trumpeter known for his genre-blending approach that fuses post-bop, soul-jazz, funk, and hip-hop. Beginning his musical journey playing in big bands alongside his trombonist brother, Kuroda pursued formal training at Berklee College of Music in Boston. There, he forged a key relationship with vocalist José James, who would later produce his breakthrough album. Continuing his studies at New York’s New School, graduating in 2006, Kuroda quickly became an integral part of the city’s vibrant jazz scene, performing with notable artists such as Junior Mance, Greg Tardy, and Valery Ponomarev.

Kuroda’s early independent albums, including "Bitter & High" (2010) and "Six Aces" (2012), highlighted his robust hard bop style. His signing with Blue Note Records propelled him to wider recognition with the 2014 release "Rising Son," produced by José James and featuring soulful covers like Roy Ayers’ "Everybody Loves the Sunshine." Expanding his sonic palette, his 2016 album "Zigzagger," released on Concord, incorporated funk and fusion, featuring collaborations with the Afrobeat group Antibalas. In 2020, Kuroda’s "Fly Moon Die Soon," recorded in Brooklyn with producer Todd Carder, further pushed genre boundaries, including reinterpretations of Ohio Players and Herbie Hancock compositions. Through his innovative fusion of styles and dynamic performances, Takuya Kuroda has solidified his reputation as a leading and boundary-defying figure in contemporary jazz.
