About Sarah Nemtanu

Sarah Nemtanu, born in Romania in 1981, is a distinguished violinist who has firmly established herself in the French classical music landscape. Shortly after her birth, her family relocated to France when her father, Vladimir Nemtanu, took up the role of principal violinist for the Bordeaux Aquitaine National Orchestra. Beginning her violin studies under her father's guidance, Sarah quickly demonstrated exceptional talent. She soon caught the attention of the acclaimed violinist Gérard Poulet, enrolling at the Paris Conservatoire in 1997. There, she refined her skills not only in violin but also in chamber music under Pierre-Laurent Aimard, graduating with top honors.

Her early career was marked by notable competition successes, including the Maurice Ravel First Prize at Saint-Jean-de-Luz (1998) and third prize at the Antonio Stradivarius competition (2001). Sarah’s breakthrough came with her 2000 debut performance of Brahms' Double Concerto alongside cellist Gautier Capuçon. She solidified her reputation as joint concertmaster and soloist of the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, sharing the position with her sister Deborah Nemtanu.

Sarah’s artistry has been showcased worldwide, featuring appearances at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York and Tokyo’s Century Hall. She has performed under the batons of legendary conductors including Kurt Masur, Bernard Haitink, Sir Colin Davis, and Riccardo Muti. Throughout her recording career, Sarah has collaborated closely with her sister Deborah, producing acclaimed albums on labels like Naïve, Naxos, Decca, and PentaTone Classics. Their recordings include Bach and Schnittke double concertos, Bartók’s "44 Duos," and Martinů's Concerto for Two Violins (2018), highlighting her versatility and enduring influence in classical music.
