About High Tone

High Tone is a pioneering French dub collective that originated in Lyon in 1997. The group was formed by a talented quintet: Lionel "DJ Twelve" Dumas, guitarist Julien "Aku Fen" Oresta, bassist Fabrice Oresta, keyboardist Antonin "Antok" Chaplin, and drummer Dominique "Selekta Dino" Peter. Emerging from Lyon’s dynamic underground dub scene alongside acts like Le Peuple de l’Herbe and Brain Damage Sound System, High Tone developed a distinctive sound that fuses the classic dub reverberations of Lee "Scratch" Perry with elements of ambient music and drum’n’bass.

High Tone’s breakthrough came with their debut album "Opus Incertum" (2000) on the independent Jarring Effects label, quickly followed by the commercially successful "Bass Temperature" (2001). Their reputation for electrifying live performances was immortalized in the 2003 release "Live," which captures the raw energy and depth that define their concerts. Demonstrating a deep commitment to collaboration, High Tone teamed up with several prominent dub artists, resulting in acclaimed projects such as "Kaltone" with Kaly Live Dub (2003), "Higvistators" with Improvisator Dub (2004), and "Wangtone" with Wang Lei (2005). Through these ventures, High Tone secured their place at the forefront of both the French and international dub scenes, blending innovation with a respect for dub’s rich heritage.

Today, High Tone remains a vital force in contemporary dub music, celebrated for their inventive soundscapes and their influence on emerging artists worldwide.
