About The Sisters of Mercy

The Sisters of Mercy, formed in Leeds in 1980 by frontman Andrew Eldritch and guitarist Gary Marx, stand as pioneers of English gothic rock. Their signature sound blends brooding post-punk with industrial, darkwave, and dance-pop elements, marked by Eldritch’s commanding deep baritone and the iconic drum machine known as Doktor Avalanche. Early lineup additions, including Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams, helped solidify their presence in the alternative music scene with compelling tracks like "Damage Done," "Alice," and "The Body Electric."

The band’s breakthrough came with their critically acclaimed debut album, "First and Last and Always" (1985), followed by the commercially successful "Floodland" (1987), which melded expansive orchestration—co-produced by Jim Steinman—with sweeping guitar arrangements. Their 1990 album, "Vision Thing," leaned into a heavier industrial metal sound while tackling politically charged themes, showcasing the band’s evolving style.

Despite internal disputes prompting key members to form The Mission, Eldritch maintained The Sisters of Mercy as a touring force for over four decades. While they ceased studio recordings after the early ’90s, a revamped version of "Temple of Love" reached number three on the UK charts in 1992, underscoring their lasting appeal. The band continues to perform internationally, enriching their live shows with newer songs like "Eyes of Caligula." With a lasting influence on gothic rock and darkwave, The Sisters of Mercy remain a vital, enduring presence in alternative music history.
