About Jordi Savall

Jordi Savall, born on August 1, 1941, in Igualada, Catalonia, is a pioneering figure in the revival of early music, renowned for his virtuosic viola da gamba performances and visionary ensemble leadership. His musical journey began in childhood choir, culminating with formal studies at the Barcelona Conservatory of Music (graduated 1965). Driven by a passion for authentic historical performance, Savall refined his craft under the guidance of eminent specialists Wieland Kuijken in Belgium and August Wenzinger at Switzerland’s Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where he later became a professor himself.

In 1968, Savall married soprano Montserrat Figueras, forging a powerful artistic partnership. Together, they co-founded the groundbreaking ensemble Hespèrion XX in 1974 (renamed Hespèrion XXI), which gained international acclaim by blending Renaissance and Baroque music with influences from Europe’s historical exchanges with Africa and the Middle East. Savall further expanded his musical vision by establishing La Capella Reial de Catalunya (1987) and Le Concert des Nations (1989), groups noted for their authentic, innovative interpretations spanning medieval to Romantic repertoires.

Savall’s prolific recording career, primarily released on his label Alia Vox since 1996, boasts over 200 albums. His artistry reached wider audiences through the acclaimed soundtrack of the film "Tous les matins du monde" (1991). His ambitious thematic projects, such as "Les Routes de l’Esclavage" (2017) and "Oriente Lux: Dialogue des âmes" (2023), explore music’s deep cultural and historical contexts across continents. A polyglot and cultural ambassador, Jordi Savall has been honored with the French Legion of Honor (2013) and named an Artist for Peace (2008), cementing his lasting impact on the early music renaissance and beyond.
