About John Coltrane

John Coltrane remains one of the most transformative and influential figures in jazz history. Born in North Carolina and raised in High Point, he began his musical journey on clarinet and alto saxophone before switching to tenor saxophone in the late 1940s. Coltrane first gained recognition playing with Miles Davis’s quintet from 1955, contributing to seminal recordings including the iconic *Kind of Blue* (1959).

Launching his solo career in 1957, Coltrane released breakthrough albums such as *Coltrane* (also known as *First Trane*) on Prestige and the critically acclaimed *Blue Train* (1957) for Blue Note. His pioneering "sheets of sound" technique—marked by rapid cascades of notes within tight chord progressions—established him as a revolutionary force. The soprano saxophone centerpiece on "My Favorite Things" (1961) propelled him to wider commercial success.

Coltrane’s legendary Classic Quartet, featuring McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, and Jimmy Garrison, defined his most creative period with groundbreaking, spiritual explorations. Their masterpiece, *A Love Supreme* (1965), remains a landmark album blending deep meditation with fearless improvisation, earning two Grammy nominations. Pushing jazz’s boundaries further, Coltrane explored avant-garde sounds on albums like *Ascension*.

Despite early struggles with addiction, Coltrane overcame adversity to redefine jazz before his premature death from liver cancer in 1967 at age 40. His enduring legacy lives on through numerous posthumous releases, documentaries like *Chasing Trane*, and ongoing influence across genres, securing his place as a seminal, visionary artist in music history.
