About Ríoghnach Connolly

Ríoghnach Connolly is a distinguished sean nós singer and flautist from Armagh, northeast Ireland, whose music is deeply rooted in a vibrant family tradition. Raised in a household steeped in Irish culture, she inherited a rich musical legacy from her father Tarlac, an uilleann piper and storyteller, and her grandparents, who were dedicated singers and song collectors. Ríoghnach refined her flute skills under the guidance of Martin Meehan and the late Aidan Prunty, studying through two generations of the acclaimed Armagh Pipers Club. Her exceptional talent earned her prestigious All-Ireland titles at key competitions such as Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Oireachtas, Slógadh, and Scór.

Now based in Manchester, Ríoghnach Connolly has become a prominent figure in contemporary folk music, blending traditional Irish sounds with global influences. She performs with her family project Lí Ban and contributes to innovative ensembles including The Breath (Real World Records), HoneyFeet ("We Are Stardust"), Band of Burns ("Órd Bán"), and the genre-crossing Afro Celt Sound System (ECC). Her powerful voice and songwriting have garnered critical acclaim, winning BBC2’s Folk Singer of the Year consecutively in 2019 and 2020 and securing a nomination for RTÉ’s Folk Singer of the Year.

Beyond performance, Ríoghnach is a respected vocal coach, workshop leader, and musical activist, committed to nurturing community music initiatives. With worldwide publishing through Real World, her compositions enrich film, television, and immersive media soundscapes, making her a dynamic ambassador of Ireland’s ancient traditions in today’s global music scene.
