About The Dukes of Dixieland

The Dukes of Dixieland are a legendary force in traditional New Orleans jazz, established in 1949 by brothers Freddie and Frank Assunto. Sons of Jac Assunto, an early New Orleans trombonist who recorded with the Midnight Serenaders in 1925, the Dukes carried forward their father’s pioneering spirit. Rising from vibrant Bourbon Street venues like the Famous Door, they gained national and international acclaim throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Their lively, toe-tapping sound and extensive touring across North America, Japan, and the Far East introduced countless audiences to classic Dixieland jazz.

The band’s prolific recording legacy includes seminal albums such as *The Dukes of Dixieland* (1957) and *The Dukes of Dixieland at Disneyland* (1962). Their collaborations with jazz icons like Louis Armstrong further cemented their stature within the jazz canon. After the deaths of Freddie in 1966 and Frank in 1973, The Dukes evolved under new leadership, maintaining residencies at prominent New Orleans venues like the Montleone Hotel and the Steamboat Natchez.

In 1999, The Dukes of Dixieland earned a Grammy nomination for "Gloryland," a compelling collaboration with Moses Hogan’s New Orleans Gospel Choir showcasing their genre-blending versatility. This spirit carried on with projects like *When Country Meets Dixie* (2012), merging country and jazz influences alongside the Oak Ridge Boys, and *Celebrating Satchmo* (2013), a heartfelt tribute to Louis Armstrong. With continued releases such as *Live at Jazzfest 2017*, The Dukes of Dixieland remain vibrant torchbearers of New Orleans’ rich musical heritage, thrilling new generations with their timeless sound.
