About Jake Shimabukuro

Jake Shimabukuro, born November 3, 1976, in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a groundbreaking ukulele virtuoso who has transformed this modest four-string instrument into a versatile vehicle for musical expression. Introduced to the ukulele by his mother at the age of four, Shimabukuro quickly developed a passion that would redefine the instrument’s possibilities. Early in his career, he performed regularly at local cafés and was a founding member of the trio Pure Heart before launching his solo journey in 2001 with the album "Elaine Maru (In Memory Of)."

Shimabukuro’s innovative approach blends genres such as jazz, blues, classical, folk, funk, and bluegrass. His signing with Epic Records in 2002 resulted in acclaimed albums "Sunday Morning" and "Skyline" (2003). By 2005, he founded his own Hitchhike Records label, where he released standout works including "Crosscurrent," "Dragon," and the widely celebrated "Gently Weeps," featuring his mesmerizing rendition of George Harrison’s "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

His virtuosity caught the attention of renowned artists like banjo legend Béla Fleck, leading to notable collaborations. Shimabukuro reached a commercial peak with "Peace, Love, Ukulele" (2011), which topped Billboard’s World Albums chart, followed by the Alan Parsons-produced "Grand Ukulele" (2012). Subsequent albums such as "Travels" (2015), "Nashville Sessions" (2016), and "The Greatest Day" (2018) showcase his evolving artistry, blending original compositions with fresh interpretations like "Eleanor Rigby." Through his virtuosic playing and heartfelt performances, Jake Shimabukuro continues to captivate audiences worldwide and elevate the ukulele’s profile on the global music stage.
