About 10cc

10cc is an innovative English art rock and pop band that rose to prominence in the early 1970s, known for their clever wit, studio mastery, and genre-blending sound. Founded by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, both former members of The Mindbenders and established figures of the British Invasion era, the group also included Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. Operating from Strawberry Studios in Stockport, 10cc initially contributed to bubblegum pop productions before shaping their own unique musical identity.

Their breakthrough came with the 1972 single "Donna," a smart doo-wop pastiche that reached number two on the UK charts, followed by the hit "Rubber Bullets" (1973). With Gouldman’s prolific songwriting background—penning classics like The Hollies’ "Bus Stop" and The Yardbirds’ "For Your Love"—and Stewart’s production skills, 10cc crafted a distinctive blend of art rock and soft rock. Their 1975 album "Original Soundtrack" featured “I’m Not in Love,” a lush, groundbreaking ballad that became a transatlantic classic, peaking at number two in the US and solidifying their international success.

After Godley and Creme departed in 1976 to explore video production and invent the Gizmo guitar device, Stewart and Gouldman carried on as the core duo. They scored additional hits including "The Things We Do for Love" (1977) and the reggae-infused "Dreadlock Holiday" (1978), which topped UK charts. Despite changes and a gradual decline in mainstream presence, 10cc’s inventive lyricism and sophisticated arrangements have ensured their lasting influence. Various reunions and anthologies, such as 2017’s "Before, During and After: The Story of 10cc" and the 2024 "20 Years" compilation, celebrate their enduring legacy in British pop and art rock history.
