About Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles is a groundbreaking electronic music project that originated in late 2003, spearheaded by producer and multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath. The name "Crystal Castles" draws inspiration from both the mystical fortress in the *He-Man* cartoon series and a classic 1983 Atari video game, reflecting the duo’s deep-rooted fascination with retro and digital culture. Kath’s innovative approach included modifying keyboards with Atari 5200 sound chips, creating a unique, lo-fi electronic sound that blends harsh noise with infectious pop hooks.

The project transformed from a solo endeavor into a duo in 2006 when vocalist Alice Glass joined, injecting raw energy and intensity that propelled Crystal Castles onto the global underground music scene. Their breakthrough came somewhat accidentally with the track "Alice Practice," initially recorded as a microphone test but quickly going viral on MySpace. This demo-turned-hit sold out a limited 7" release on Merok Records in just days, marking the start of their rapid rise.

Building momentum through remixing for artists like Klaxons, Bloc Party, and Health, and touring with acts such as The Presets and Metric, Crystal Castles released their self-titled debut album in 2008 via Last Gang Records. They followed it with a second self-titled album in 2010, which faced an early leak and was subsequently released digitally. Their third album, *III* (2012), was recorded in Warsaw using analog, tape-based techniques, delivering a more raw and refined sound.

After Alice Glass left the band in 2014 to pursue solo work, Ethan Kath introduced vocalist Edith Frances. Together, they released *Amnesty* (2016), featuring fresh material that marked a new era for Crystal Castles, blending their signature electronic intensity with evolving sonic textures. Throughout their career, Crystal Castles have remained influential innovators in electronic music, celebrated for their fearless experimentation and iconic underground appeal.
