About Ginuwine

Ginuwine, born Elgin Baylor Lumpkin on October 15, 1970, in Washington, D.C., rose to prominence during the golden era of 1990s R&B as one of the genre's most captivating voices. Inspired by musical legends like Prince and Michael Jackson—whose iconic Motown 25th Anniversary moonwalk performance ignited his passion—Ginuwine began his artistic journey at age 12 with the local hip-hop group Finesse Five, performing at parties and clubs while later earning a paralegal degree as a practical backup plan.

His breakthrough came through a collaboration with groundbreaking producer Timbaland, resulting in the sultry hit single "Pony" from his 1996 debut album, "Ginuwine...The Bachelor." The album’s unique blend of futuristic beats and romantic vocals earned double-platinum status, solidifying Ginuwine’s status as a sex symbol with widespread appeal. Following this success, he continued to build his legacy with albums like "100% Ginuwine" (1999), featuring the platinum-selling single "So Anxious," and "The Life" (2001), highlighted by the crossover hit "Differences." Despite personal hardships—including the loss of both parents in 2001—Ginuwine remained a consistent force in R&B with releases such as "The Senior" (2003), "Back II da Basics" (2005), "A Man's Thoughts" (2009), and "Elgin" (2011).

Beyond his solo career, Ginuwine became part of the R&B supergroup TGT alongside Tank and Tyrese, further showcasing his enduring influence in contemporary rhythm and blues. His emotive delivery and innovative collaborations have secured his place as an influential architect of modern R&B music.
