About DJ Krush

DJ Krush, born in Tokyo in 1962, is a trailblazer in Japanese hip-hop whose innovative turntablism and experimental production have garnered international acclaim. Beginning his career in the mid-1980s as a bedroom DJ inspired by the Wild Style tour, he quickly expanded into mobile DJ sets and collaborations with local rappers. His distinctive sound fuses abstract instrumental hip-hop with ambient textures, breakbeats, and subtle scratching, carving a unique niche within the genre.

Krush’s 1994 debut album, "Krush," initially released only in Japan, blended R&B and acid jazz influences, laying the foundation for his signature style. His global breakthrough came through London's influential Mo'Wax label, which released pivotal albums like "Strictly Turntablized" (1994) and "Meiso" (1995). The latter features "Duality," a landmark track introducing DJ Shadow and featuring Guru and CL Smooth, cementing Krush’s stature on the world stage. His collaboration with avant-garde trumpeter Toshinori Kondo on "Ki-Oku" (1996) further bridged jazz and hip-hop.

Throughout his career, DJ Krush has worked with diverse artists including Mos Def, Mr. Lif, Aesop Rock, and El-P, while releasing music on major labels such as Sony Japan, Virgin UK, and A&M America. After a creative hiatus, he made a compelling return with "Butterfly Effect" (2015) and celebrated 25 years as a solo artist with "Kiseki" (2017), an album spotlighting Japanese MCs. Today, DJ Krush remains a pioneering force in experimental hip-hop, influential both in Japan and across the globe.
