About Aphrodite’s Child

Aphrodite’s Child was a groundbreaking Greek progressive rock band that left an indelible mark on the late 1960s and early 1970s music scene. Formed in 1967 by keyboardist Vangelis Papathanassiou and vocalist-guitarist Demis Roussos—both veterans of Greece’s burgeoning rock milieu—the band also included drummer Loukas Sideras and guitarist Silver Koulouris. Initially collaborating on projects like George Romanos’ 1968 album "In Concert and in Studio," they soon established themselves under the name Aphrodite’s Child.

Their debut single, "Rain and Tears" (1968), became an international hit, seamlessly blending psychedelic pop with art rock influences, and was featured on their first album, "End of the World" (1968). Seeking broader horizons, the band aimed to settle in London but found themselves in Paris due to work permit challenges. In France, they signed with Mercury Records and scored further success with their second album, "It’s Five O’Clock" (1969), which topped the French charts.

Aphrodite’s Child’s magnum opus arrived with the release of the double concept album "666" (1972), a daring musical interpretation of the biblical Book of Revelation. Though initially met with limited commercial success and coinciding with the band’s dissolution, "666" has since achieved cult status. Its innovative fusion of progressive and psychedelic rock has influenced generations of musicians, cementing Aphrodite’s Child’s legacy as pioneers of art rock. While the group never reunited, members occasionally collaborated, with Vangelis achieving legendary status as a solo composer until his death in 2022.
