About Ratatat

Ratatat is a Brooklyn-based electronic rock duo formed in 2001 by multi-instrumentalist and programmer Evan Mast and guitarist Mike Stroud. Initially known as Cherry, they rebranded to Ratatat in 2003, releasing their breakthrough debut single through the indie label Audio Dregs, co-managed by Mast and his brother. This early exposure paved the way for extensive tours alongside influential bands like Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, and Battles, helping solidify their reputation.

Their self-titled debut album (2004), released on XL Records, introduced a distinctive fusion of melodic guitar riffs layered over programmed electronic beats. Ratatat continued to refine their sound with subsequent albums—Classics (2006), LP3 (2008), and LP4 (2010)—each evolving with richer percussion and keyboard elements while maintaining their signature blend of rock and electronic music. The duo’s creative process often unfolds remotely: Mast develops beats in his home studio, while Stroud adds guitar textures during his travels, which have included touring with acts such as Ben Kweller and Dashboard Confessional.

After recording sessions in diverse locations like Jamaica and upstate New York, Ratatat returned with their fifth album, Magnifique (2015). This release highlighted their experimental edge, featuring a cover of Springwater’s 1971 track "I Will Return" and showcasing their ongoing commitment to innovation. Known for their seamless merging of genres and energetic live performances at major festivals like Coachella and Governors Ball, Ratatat remains a pioneering force in blending electronic production with rock instrumentation.
