About Slipmatt

Slipmatt, born in Essex in 1967, stands as a seminal figure in the evolution of British electronic dance music, particularly within the early-’90s rave and happy hardcore scenes. His musical journey began in the early 1980s, inspired by punk, ska, and dub, which fueled his passion and led him to start DJing as a teenager. By his mid-teens, Slipmatt was already honing his skills behind the decks, collaborating with a mobile DJ before acquiring his own turntables.

In partnership with DJ Lime, he formed the influential duo SL2, gaining momentum with early tracks like "Do That Dance" and the self-released "DJs Take Control." Their breakthrough came in 1992 with the iconic rave anthem "On a Ragga Tip," a track that masterfully fused breakbeat and techno elements. Licensed to XL Recordings, it soared to number four on the UK charts and remains a defining moment in rave history.

Following SL2’s dissolution, Slipmatt shifted focus from the darker underground sounds to the uplifting energy of happy hardcore. As a DJ, producer, and label founder, he established Universal, Awesome, and United Dance Records, which became instrumental in shaping and promoting the genre throughout the mid-1990s. His artistry extended beyond production and performance; Slipmatt contributed as a dance magazine reviewer and curated acclaimed mix compilations, including several volumes of Mixmag Live! and the retrospectives in the *United Dance Presents: The Anthems 92-97* series. Through these multifaceted efforts, Slipmatt helped elevate hardcore techno into a more artist-driven and critically respected arena, solidifying his legacy as a visionary pioneer in the UK rave and happy hardcore movements.
