About Chico Buarque

Chico Buarque, born Francisco Buarque de Hollanda in Rio de Janeiro, is a towering figure in Brazilian culture, renowned as a singer, songwriter, poet, novelist, and playwright. Raised in an intellectually rich environment—his father was the historian Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda and his mother a gifted pianist and painter—he was deeply influenced by the pioneering sounds of bossa nova icons like Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, and Vinícius de Moraes. Buarque’s musical career took off in the early 1960s, with his 1966 self-titled debut album delivering multiple chart-topping singles and establishing his unique blend of samba, MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), and bossa nova, often charged with subtle political commentary.

A founding member of the Tropicalia movement, Chico’s 1971 album "Construção," created during his exile in Italy amidst Brazil’s military dictatorship, remains a landmark in Brazilian music. His creative scope expanded into theater with works like "Calabar - O Elogio da Traição" (1973), and he forged lasting collaborations with major Brazilian artists, including Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento, and Gal Costa. The 1978 album "Chico Buarque" is celebrated as a samba classic, featuring the powerful duet "Cálice" with Nascimento.

Beyond music, Chico Buarque has made a significant mark as a novelist, with acclaimed books such as "Leite Derramado" (2009), "O Irmão Alemão" (2014), and "Essa Gente" (2019). His literary excellence was recognized by the prestigious Camões Prize in 2023. Demonstrating his continual evolution, the 2017 album "Caravanas" blends samba with jazz, blues, and classical influences, affirming Chico Buarque’s enduring impact on Brazilian arts and global music.
