About Yaz

Yaz is a seminal British synth-pop duo formed in 1982 by Vince Clarke, former founding member of Depeche Mode, and Alison Moyet, whose powerful, soulful voice became a defining element of their sound. Emerging at the dawn of the 1980s, Yaz quickly carved out a distinctive niche in the synth-pop and new wave scenes by blending emotionally honest lyrics with innovative electronic arrangements. Their debut album, "Upstairs at Eric's" (1982), is widely regarded as a synth-pop classic, highlighted by the haunting ballad "Only You," which soared to number two on the UK Singles Chart and showcased Moyet’s expressive vocals layered over Clarke’s inventive synthesizer work.

Building on this success, Yaz released their second and final album, "You and Me Both" (1983), which continued to fuse electronic experimentation with heartfelt songwriting. Tracks like "Situation" and "Don't Go" became iconic dancefloor anthems, cementing the duo's reputation for mixing polished production with raw emotional intensity. Despite their brief two-year collaboration, Yaz made a lasting impact on 1980s popular music by bridging underground synthpop with mainstream appeal. Their distinctive approach—combining vulnerability and electrifying synth melodies—has ensured their continued influence on contemporary artists and enduring popularity among fans worldwide.
