About Gong

Gong, founded in 1969 by Daevid Allen—formerly of Soft Machine—stands as a pioneering force in progressive rock, blending psychedelic rock, jazz, and mysticism into a distinctive and experimental sound. Born from Allen’s vivid psychedelic visions and spiritual outlook, Gong evolved beyond a conventional band into a sprawling musical collective and living mythology throughout the 1970s. Their innovative fusion of surreal storytelling and genre-defying music established them as one of the most influential and adventurous acts of their era.

Over the decades, Gong released landmark albums that include *Flying Teapot* (1973) and *Angel’s Egg* (1973), which showcased their signature blend of whimsical narratives and complex instrumentation. Following Allen’s passing, the band was revitalized by a steady lineup featuring Kavus Torabi, Dave Sturt, Fabio Golfetti, Ian East, and Cheb Nettles. This group, together for more than eight years, has remained dedicated to carrying forward Allen’s vision—continuing to write, record, and tour while pushing Gong’s sound into new and unexplored realms.
