About James

Manchester-based alternative rock band James has built a remarkable career spanning over four decades, selling more than 25 million albums worldwide. Emerging in the 1980s with a devoted cult following thanks to their art rock sound and early tracks like “Johnny Yen,” James broke into the mainstream with their 1990 major-label debut, *Gold Mother*. This pivotal album delivered euphoric anthems such as “Come Home” and “Sit Down,” which became defining songs of the era.

The band’s fifth album, *Laid* (1993), marked their breakthrough into the American market, driven by the enduring popularity of the title track “Laid.” Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, James solidified their legacy with critically acclaimed albums including *Whiplash* (1997), *Millionaires* (1999), and *Pleased To Meet You* (2001), featuring memorable singles like “Tomorrow,” “She’s A Star,” and “Just Like Fred Astaire.”

After a six-year hiatus, James returned triumphantly with *Hey Ma* (2008), initiating a prolific period that saw releases such as *Girl at the End of the World* (2016), *Living in Extraordinary Times* (2018), and *All The Colours Of You* (2021). Celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2023, the band unveiled *Be Opened By The Wonderful*, an orchestral reimagining of their work. In April 2024, James reached a career milestone when their 18th studio album, *Yummy*, topped the UK Albums Chart for the first time. The album explores contemporary themes like politics, artificial intelligence, and conspiracy theories, showcasing the band’s relentless drive to evolve and stay relevant across generations.
