About Marillion

Formed in Aylesbury, England, in 1979, Marillion has solidified its place as a pioneering force in neo-progressive rock. Initially named Silmarillion after J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, the band quickly refined their sound with founding members Steve Rothery (guitar), Mark Kelly (keyboards), Pete Trewavas (bass), and Ian Mosley (drums). Their early phase was defined by the charismatic and theatrical vocals of Derek Dick, known as Fish, whose presence helped Marillion garner attention with landmark albums like "Script for a Jester’s Tear" (1983) and "Fugazi" (1984).

Marillion’s breakthrough came with the conceptual and chart-topping masterpiece "Misplaced Childhood" (1985), which delivered iconic singles such as "Kayleigh" and "Lavender," cementing their mainstream success. Despite Fish’s departure in 1988 amid personal and creative tensions, the band reinvented themselves by recruiting Steve Hogarth as lead singer. This transition ushered in a new era marked by experimentation that blended progressive rock with post-punk, indie, and electronica influences. Albums like "Brave" (1994), "Afraid of Sunlight" (1995), and "Marbles" (2004) showcase this evolving soundscape.

Marillion also pioneered fan-funded music distribution, breaking away from major labels to establish their own independent imprints. This innovative approach fueled their extensive touring and cultivated a devoted global fanbase. With over 15 million albums sold worldwide, the band continues to evolve, as evidenced by later releases such as "FEAR" (2016) and "An Hour Before It’s Dark" (2021). Marillion’s enduring creativity and sophisticated lyricism affirm their status as influential yet often underappreciated innovators in the progressive rock genre.
