About Songhoy Blues

Songhoy Blues, one of Mali’s most acclaimed musical exports, burst onto the international scene in 2013 with their unique fusion of desert blues and rock, a style they proudly dub “Timbuktu Punk.” Hailing from the culturally rich region along the bend of the Niger River, the band draws inspiration from their Songhoy heritage, incorporating the traditional five-note scales and rhythms of the Songhai people into their energetic sound. Their music seamlessly blends gritty vocals, shimmering guitars, and driving rock beats, while addressing themes rooted in contemporary Malian life and love.

The group quickly gained global recognition for this compelling blend of ancestral desert blues and modern rock influences. Over the years, Songhoy Blues have crafted a powerful reputation for their dynamic stage presence and authentic storytelling, positioning themselves as torchbearers of Malian rock music.

In 2025, Songhoy Blues released their fourth studio album, "Héritage," through Transgressive Records, marking a significant evolution in their sound. This album embraces more acoustic, intimate arrangements and a deeper exploration of Mali’s diverse ethnic musical traditions. "Héritage" pays tribute to their ancestral musicians, highlighting intricate grooves and varied vocal styles that reflect both personal and cultural narratives. This creative shift demonstrates the band’s ongoing commitment to honoring their roots while pushing the boundaries of desert blues, ensuring their music remains both timeless and innovative.
