About Eric Burdon

Eric Burdon stands as one of the most iconic voices of the British Invasion era, gaining fame as the lead singer of the 1960s blues-rock band The Animals. Born in 1941 in England, Burdon’s gritty, passionate vocals helped define the group’s signature sound on hits like “House of the Rising Sun.” After the original Animals disbanded in 1966, Burdon transformed the lineup into Eric Burdon & the Animals, shifting toward a psychedelic rock style with noteworthy tracks such as “Sky Pilot.” Although this phase embraced experimental sounds, some of its music aged unevenly.

Burdon’s most significant artistic revival came in the early 1970s when he joined forces with the Los Angeles-based funk band War. Their collaboration blended rock, funk, and soul, producing standout work including the enduring hit “Spill the Wine” (1970) and three albums that explored a unique, spacey funk-rock fusion. Despite War’s rising success, Burdon parted ways with the group in 1971, pursuing an active solo career and continuing to tour extensively in the decades that followed.

Beyond music, Burdon has explored painting and writing, underscoring his artistic versatility. His later albums, such as “My Secret Life” (2004) and “Soul of a Man” (2006), reflect his ongoing creative vitality. A notable resurgence happened in 2012 when Bruce Springsteen spotlighted him at South by Southwest, sparking collaborations with artists like the Greenhornes and culminating in the acclaimed 2013 album “’Til Your River Runs Dry.” Today, Eric Burdon remains a seminal figure in British blues rock and psychedelic music, celebrated for his powerful live performances and enduring influence.
