About Alex Wilson

Alex Wilson, born on November 21, 1971, in Belper, Derbyshire, England, is a pianist and composer known for his vibrant fusion of salsa, jazz, and West African rhythms. Growing up across Sierra Leone, Austria, Switzerland, and the UK, Wilson’s multicultural background deeply influenced his eclectic sound. Initially a guitarist, he switched to piano at 17 and pursued formal studies at the University of York and the University of California before settling in London in 1993.

Immersed in London’s dynamic salsa and jazz scenes, Wilson quickly established himself as a versatile session pianist, working with renowned artists such as Roberto Pla, Gary Crosby’s Nu Troop, Jazz Jamaica, Toumani Diabaté, and Jesús Alemañy. In 1998, he formed his own band and released his debut album, *Afro Saxon* (1998), blending Latinized jazz with original compositions featuring US saxophonist Bobby Watson. His follow-up album, *Anglo Cubano* (2000), recorded partly in Havana, captured an authentic Cuban vibe through collaborations with legends like Mario "Mayito" Rivera of Los Van Van and Clave Y Guaguanco.

Joining Courtney Pine’s band in 2000, Wilson toured internationally and won the Newcomer Award at the 2001 BBC Jazz Awards. He continued to innovate with his Power Latin band and self-founded label, releasing acclaimed albums like *Aventuras* (2005), rooted in Afro-Colombian sounds, and *Inglaterra* (2007), which uniquely fused salsa with bhangra and featured the standout track "Oh Kuri." Through his seamless blending of diverse musical traditions, Alex Wilson remains a distinctive figure in contemporary jazz and Latin music.
