About The Isley Brothers

The Isley Brothers, originating in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the early 1950s, are one of the most enduring and versatile acts in popular music history. Founded as a gospel quartet by brothers Ronald, Rudolph, O'Kelly, and Vernon Isley—encouraged musically by their parents—the group transitioned from gospel to gritty R&B, Motown soul, funk, and rock over nearly five decades. Tragedy struck early with Vernon’s death in 1955, after which Ronald took over lead vocals.

Their breakthrough came unexpectedly in 1959 during a live performance when their impromptu addition to "Lonely Teardrops" sparked the creation of the electrifying anthem "Shout." Though it didn’t crack the pop Top 40 initially, the song became a timeless classic covered by generations of artists. The Isleys’ 1962 cover of "Twist and Shout" further cemented their influence, notably inspiring the Beatles and other British Invasion bands.

In 1964, they worked with a young guitarist, Jimmy James—later Jimi Hendrix—on early recordings like "Testify." After signing with Motown in 1965, they scored the UK hit "This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)" yet soon sought creative freedom by returning to their own T-Neck label. This move paid off with their 1969 breakout funk-rock hit "It's Your Thing," which reached number two on the charts.

The addition of younger brothers Ernie and Marvin, along with brother-in-law Chris Jasper, expanded their sound during the 1970s. Albums such as 3 + 3 (1973) and The Heat Is On (1975) showcased hits like "That Lady" and "Fight the Power," blending funk, rock, and soul with Ernie’s distinctive guitar work. Despite setbacks, including O’Kelly’s death in 1986 and lineup changes, The Isley Brothers continued recording and evolving. Collaborations with artists like Jill Scott, Raphael Saadiq, and Carlos Santana—on the 2017 album Power of Peace—highlighted their lasting legacy. Today, The Isley Brothers remain a seminal force, bridging generations with their innovative sound and timeless classics.
