About Ash Ra Tempel

Ash Ra Tempel, formed in 1970 in Germany, stands as a seminal force in the evolution of psychedelic rock into the kosmische or “cosmic” sound that defined 1970s experimental music. Founded by classically trained guitarist Manuel Göttsching, the original lineup included Klaus Schulze on drums—fresh from Tangerine Dream—and bassist Hartmut Enke. Their debut album, "Ash Ra Tempel" (1971), is widely regarded as a groundbreaking fusion of improvisational guitar work and electronic textures. Shortly after, Schulze left to pursue a highly influential solo career, leaving Göttsching to steer the project through numerous phases.

Ash Ra Tempel became known for collaborations with prominent figures such as counterculture icon Timothy Leary on the pioneering 1973 album "Seven Up," which further cemented their reputation in psychedelic and electronic circles. By the mid-1970s, the group's sound and identity morphed as Göttsching took a more solitary creative role, releasing works under the simplified name Ashra, including landmark albums like "New Age of Earth" (1976) and "Blackouts" (1977). Concurrently, Göttsching’s solo releases like "Inventions for Electric Guitar" showcased his innovative blend of electric guitar and synthesizers.

In the 1980s, Ashra evolved into a full band once more with guitarist Lutz Ulbrich and drummer Harald Grosskopf joining Göttsching. His solo masterpiece "E2–E4" (1984) became a foundational work in electronic music, influencing artists across genres. The enduring partnership between Göttsching and Schulze was reignited in 1989 when they collaborated on Alphaville’s "The Breathtaking Blue." Manuel Göttsching’s death in 2022 marked the end of an era, but Ash Ra Tempel’s legacy continues to inspire the fusion of psychedelic rock and electronic soundscapes worldwide.
