About Raw Odoni

Raw Odoni is an innovative contemporary jazz quartet formed in 2023 in South London, distinguished by its adventurous approach to post-bop music. The group comprises Hu Spall on saxophones, Matthew Shorter on piano, Dan Richards on bass, and Christian Lewcock on drums, each member bringing a unique voice that shapes the ensemble’s dynamic sound. Rooted in the rich traditions of jazz icons such as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis, Raw Odoni pushes beyond conventional boundaries by weaving influences from avant-garde composer John Cage, experimental Australian ensemble The Necks, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, and the psychedelic textures of Gong into their work.

This eclectic fusion results in music that feels both deeply respectful of jazz history and boldly contemporary. Raw Odoni thrives on spontaneous creativity and the organic chemistry between its members, embracing improvisation to continually evolve their compositions and performances. Their collaborative ethos invites unexpected sonic textures and harmonic explorations, offering listeners a fresh and immersive experience that reflects the vibrancy of South London’s jazz scene. Through this blend of tradition and innovation, Raw Odoni has quickly established itself as a compelling voice in modern jazz, captivating audiences with their boundary-defying sound.
