About Boards of Canada

Boards of Canada is a Scottish electronic music duo formed in 1986 by brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin. Named as a tribute to the National Film Board of Canada, the pair have crafted one of the most distinctive and influential sounds in ambient and downtempo music. Their signature style blends warm, nostalgic synth textures with midtempo hip-hop beats and grainy samples, often evoking the feel of 1970s nature documentaries and children’s television programs.

Their breakthrough debut, "Music Has the Right to Children" (1998), revolutionized home-listening electronic music and established them as pioneers in the downtempo and intelligent dance music scenes. This was followed by the darker, more psychedelic "Geogaddi" (2002), noted for its cryptic allusions to numerology and cult imagery. The duo’s evolving sound palette then embraced a more guitar-driven approach on "The Campfire Headphase" (2005). After nearly a decade of relative silence, they returned with "Tomorrow’s Harvest" (2013), an atmospheric and cinematic album inspired by film composers like John Carpenter and Wendy Carlos, which became their highest-charting release worldwide.

Known for their reclusive nature and mysterious promotional tactics, Boards of Canada have cultivated a dedicated cult following through strategic scarcity. They have also contributed remixes for artists such as Beck and Mira Calix and participated in special projects, including Warp Records’ 30th anniversary celebrations. Their haunting yet nostalgic soundscapes continue to captivate and influence electronic music enthusiasts around the globe.
