About Austra

Austra is a Canadian synth-pop and dark wave band that emerged from Toronto’s vibrant underground music scene in 2009. Fronted by vocalist and composer Katie Stelmanis, whose operatic training lends a powerful emotional depth, Austra masterfully blends art pop with electronic and new wave influences. Their distinctive sound, characterized by haunting melodies and atmospheric soundscapes, has earned them critical acclaim and a loyal international following.

The band’s debut album, "Feel It Break" (2011), introduced listeners to their unique fusion of moody synth textures and introspective lyrics, propelled by standout singles like "Lose It" and "Spellwork." Austra’s evolution continued with albums such as "Olympia" (2013) and "Future Politics" (2017), which expanded their sonic palette to include danceable beats and socio-political themes, reflecting both timeless artistry and contemporary relevance.

Known for pushing the boundaries between experimental electronic music and accessible songwriting, Austra balances underground innovation with mainstream appeal. Their work, released through influential independent labels like Domino Recording Company and Paper Bag Records, showcases a sophisticated blend of classical sensibilities and modern production techniques.

Rooted in Toronto’s diverse cultural influences, Austra remains a significant force within the global indie electronic scene, captivating audiences with their thought-provoking compositions and commanding live performances at major festivals worldwide.
