About The Coral

The Coral, a seminal indie rock band from Hoylake on the Wirral Peninsula, formed in 1996 when school friends James Skelly (vocals/guitar), Bill Ryder-Jones (guitar), Ian Skelly (drums), and Paul Duffy (bass) joined forces, later welcoming Lee Southall and keyboardist Nick Power. Their sound is a vibrant fusion of 1960s garage rock, psychedelic pop, folk, and Merseybeat, infused with hints of Motown, vintage blues, and even sea shanties, setting them apart in the British music scene.

The band’s breakthrough came with their self-titled debut album (2002), which reached number five on the UK charts and earned a Mercury Prize nomination. They solidified their reputation with the chart-topping follow-up, "Magic and Medicine" (2003), produced by Ian Broudie. Over the years, The Coral have demonstrated remarkable sonic versatility—from the darker, lo-fi textures of "Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker" (2004) to the stripped-down, Portishead-produced "The Invisible Invasion" (2005). They embraced '70s rock on "Distance Inbetween" (2016) and revisited melodic pop influences on "Move Through the Dawn" (2018).

After a brief hiatus, The Coral returned with the ambitious double concept album "Coral Island" (2021), a nostalgic tribute to English seaside life. Their 2023 releases "Sea of Mirrors," featuring lush country-rock arrangements and string orchestrations alongside actor Cillian Murphy, and "Holy Joe’s Coral Island Medicine Show," blending narrative storytelling with atmospheric country vibes, underscore their continuous evolution. Throughout nearly three decades, The Coral have remained a creative force, blending vintage sounds with contemporary innovation to secure their place as one of Britain’s most inventive and enduring bands.
