About Skinny Puppy

Skinny Puppy, formed in 1982 in Vancouver, British Columbia, stands as a pioneering force in the dark avant-industrial music scene. Founded by cEvin Key (Kevin Crompton), previously a drummer for Images in Vogue, and vocalist Nivek Ogre (Kevin Ogilvie), the band drew heavy inspiration from trailblazers like Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, and Suicide. Their initial releases, including the cassette "Back and Forth" and the 1984 EP "Remission," showcased an innovative blend of industrial, gothic, and electronic sounds, helped by producer David "Rave" Ogilvie.

The addition of keyboardist Dwayne Goettel in 1986 marked a turning point, replacing Wilhelm Schroeder after their debut album "Bites" (1985). Goettel’s mastery of sampling and synthesizers was instrumental in shaping Skinny Puppy’s distinctive sonic identity. This era produced landmark albums such as "Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse" (1986), "Cleanse, Fold and Manipulate" (1987), and "VIVIsectVI" (1988), which combined dark electronic rhythms with politically charged and provocative lyrics.

Collaboration with Ministry’s Al Jourgensen on the 1989 album "Rabies" expanded their experimental approach, though internal tensions and struggles with substance abuse soon impacted the group. The tragic death of Goettel in 1995 amid the difficult production of "The Process" nearly ended the band. After disbanding, Skinny Puppy was revitalized in the early 2000s when Key and Ogre reconciled, leading to new works like "Greater Wrong of the Right" (2004), featuring guest artists from Tool and Static-X, as well as "Mythmaker" (2007) and "Handover" (2011).

Known for their innovative sound and striking multimedia performances, Skinny Puppy remains a seminal influence in industrial music, with live releases like "Bootlegged, Broke and in Solvent Seas" (2012) cementing their enduring legacy in electronic and alternative music culture worldwide.
