About Al Stewart

Al Stewart, born Alastair Ian Stewart on September 5, 1945, in Greenock, Scotland, is a distinguished singer-songwriter renowned for his unique fusion of folk, rock, and sophisticated pop. Following the tragic death of his father in a military plane crash, Stewart moved to Dorset, England, where he began his musical journey amid the vibrant 1960s British folk revival. Sharing stages with luminaries like Paul Simon and Bert Jansch in London’s coffee house scene, he quickly gained recognition for his insightful and often narrative-driven songwriting.

Stewart first attracted attention with the uncensored lyrics on his 1969 album "Love Chronicles," establishing his reputation for candid storytelling. His sound evolved through early works like "Orange" (1972) and "Past, Present & Future" (1973), where historical themes became a hallmark. Collaborating with producer Alan Parsons, Stewart reached international acclaim with the soft rock classics "Year of the Cat" (1976) and "Time Passages" (1978), both featuring hits that made significant impacts on the Billboard charts.

Beyond his commercial success, Al Stewart continued to explore intellectually rich themes in albums such as the politically charged "Russians & Americans" (1984) and historically inspired projects like "Between the Wars" (1995).
