About Residente

René Pérez Joglar, professionally known as Residente, is a pioneering Puerto Rican rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and film director celebrated for his profound impact on Latin music. Raised in a middle-class household enriched by the artistic influence of his actress mother, Residente initially pursued baseball before discovering a passion for music and visual arts, eventually earning a Fine Arts degree from Puerto Rico’s Escuela de Artes Plásticas and further studies at the Savannah College of Art & Design in Georgia.

In 2004, Residente co-founded the groundbreaking rap group Calle 13 with his stepbrother, Eduardo Cabra Martínez (Visitante). Merging hip-hop with diverse Latin genres such as bomba, salsa, funk, rock, and jazz, Calle 13 became renowned for its socially conscious and politically charged lyrics. The group rapidly gained fame with controversial hits like "Querido F.B.I." and "Se Vale To-To," achieving critical acclaim and commercial success across Latin America. Over their career, Calle 13 secured a record-breaking 24 Latin Grammy Awards, the most ever awarded to a single act in Latin music history.

Following Calle 13’s 2013 album "Multi_Viral," Residente launched a solo career, traveled extensively, and infused his 2017 self-titled album "Residente" with global sounds. This solo debut earned him a Latin Grammy for Best Urban Music Album and a Grammy nomination. Beyond music, Residente is recognized for his humanitarian efforts with organizations like UNICEF and Amnesty International, continuously using his art to challenge norms and amplify marginalized voices, securing his place as a formidable and timeless figure in Latin culture.
