About Kelela

Kelela Mizanekristos, known mononymously as Kelela, is a Washington, D.C.-born Ethiopian-American singer, songwriter, and producer celebrated for her seamless fusion of contemporary R&B and progressive electronic music. Raised in suburban Maryland, she developed her passion for music through jazz studies, drawing inspiration from artists such as Amel Larrieux and Little Dragon. In 2010, Kelela relocated to Los Angeles to cultivate her unique sound.

Her breakthrough arrived with the 2013 mixtape "Cut 4 Me," released on the Fade to Mind label. Featuring production from Kingdom, Bok Bok, Jam City, and Girl Unit, this project established her as a pioneering force in electronic-infused R&B. This early success led to collaborations with notable artists including Solange, Gorillaz, and Danny Brown.

Kelela’s debut studio album, "Take Me Apart" (2017), released via Warp Records, received widespread critical acclaim and climbed to number 18 on the Billboard R&B/hip-hop chart, showcasing her talent for creating emotionally rich, club-ready music. Prior to this, she also unveiled the conceptually ambitious "Hallucinogen" EP (2015), which explored relationships in reverse chronological order. In 2018, she released "Take Me A_Part, The Remixes," featuring contributions from Kaytranada and CupcakKe.

After a brief hiatus, Kelela returned in 2022 with the evocative single "Washed Away," leading into her sophomore album "Raven" (2023). This work serves as a powerful celebration of Black femme identity amid systemic erasure. The accompanying remix collection "RAVE:N" (2024) features reinterpretations by artists such as Yaeji, Loraine James, and Shygirl, further cementing her status as an innovative and influential voice in modern music.
