About TV Smith

TV Smith, born in 1956 in Romford, England, is a seminal figure in British punk rock, renowned for his influential work with the Adverts before launching a prolific solo career that spans over four decades. Following the breakup of TV Smith’s Explorers in late 1981, he embarked on a solo journey marked by resilience and creative evolution. In 1982, he recorded the single "Burning Rain" with the Nervous Germans, though label complications delayed its release. Smith’s debut solo album, *Channel Five* (1983), featured collaborations with guitarist Tim Renwick and former Adverts keyboardist Tim Cross but suffered from the collapse of the Expulsion label soon after.

Throughout the late 1980s, Smith fronted the band Cheap until 1991 before returning to solo work with acclaimed albums such as *March of the Giants* (1992) and *The Immortal Rich* (1995). His powerful acoustic tribute to the Adverts’ classic album *Crossing the Red Sea* at the 1996 Holidays in the Sun festival showcased his dynamic performance style and was immortalized on the *One Chord Wonder* DVD. Smith’s enduring influence continued into the 21st century with a rigorous touring schedule across Europe and the U.S., performing over 100 shows annually, a period he documented in his 2006 tour diary, *Getting There*.

His later work includes notable albums like *Generation Y* (1998), *Not a Bad Day* (2003), and *Misinformation Overload* (2006). Throughout his career, Smith fostered strong collaborations with international punk bands, most notably German legends Die Toten Hosen, who supported his 1998 album and co-wrote material on their *Crash-Landing* (1999) album as well as his 2001 compilation *Useless: The Very Best of TV Smith*. His global impact is further highlighted by recordings with Finland’s Punk Lurex OK and Spain’s Suzi & los Quattros, cementing his legacy as a versatile and enduring figure in punk and alternative music.
