About Chicago

Chicago is one of America’s most enduring and successful rock bands, renowned for their innovative fusion of rock, jazz, classical, R&B, and pop. Formed in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois, the group uniquely combined classically trained musicians from DePaul University—such as reed player Walter Parazaider, trumpeter Lee Loughnane, and trombonist James Pankow—with street-smart talents like guitarist Terry Kath and drummer Danny Seraphine. Initially known as the Big Thing, they soon became Chicago Transit Authority before shortening their name to Chicago due to legal reasons.

Under the production guidance of James William Guercio, Chicago made a bold entrance with their double album debut "Chicago Transit Authority" (1969). Although it lacked a traditional hit single, the album gained underground acclaim and commercial success, especially through FM radio support. Following albums like "Chicago II" and "Chicago III" cemented their chart dominance with classics including "Make Me Smile" and "25 or 6 to 4." Their golden era peaked in the 1970s with albums such as "Chicago V," featuring "Saturday in the Park," and the Grammy-winning ballad "If You Leave Me Now."

Despite challenges, including the tragic death of Terry Kath in 1978 and Peter Cetera’s departure in 1985, Chicago adapted and thrived. The 1980s saw them embrace a polished pop-rock sound with hits like "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" and "You're the Inspiration," particularly on the multi-platinum "Chicago 16" (1982) and "Chicago 17" (1984). With a career spanning over five decades, consistent reinvention, and a loyal global fanbase, Chicago’s legacy was honored with their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2016. Their unique blend of genres and timeless hits continue to influence and captivate audiences worldwide.
