About Branko

Branko, born João Barbosa in Amadora on the outskirts of Lisbon, is a trailblazing Portuguese producer, DJ, and co-founder of the pioneering collective Buraka Som Sistema. He also helms the influential Enchufada label, which has played a key role in introducing Portugal’s underground electronic sounds to the global stage. Immersed in the multicultural club scenes around Lisbon, Branko’s music seamlessly blends genres like kuduro, kizomba, zouk, and baile funk—styles that reflect the vibrant rhythms of his community.

As a multifaceted artist and curator, Branko has been instrumental not only in producing captivating beats but also in promoting a diverse electronic music culture that resonates worldwide. His fourth solo album, "Soma" (2021), stands as a testament to his collaborative spirit and sonic innovation. Created during an intense three-day jam session in Lisbon, the album captures raw, improvised grooves fueled by some of the city’s top musicians. This organic process underscores Branko’s dedication to authenticity and to bridging local sounds with international influences.

Throughout his career, Branko’s vision has helped redefine electronic music by championing Portugal’s distinctive rhythms while fostering creative exchanges that continue to influence the global dance music scene.
