About Squirrel Nut Zippers

Squirrel Nut Zippers, formed in 1993 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, by Jimbo Mathus and Katharine Whalen, carved a distinctive niche in the 1990s swing revival. Drawing deeply from New Orleans jazz, Harlem hot jazz, and prewar American swing, the band’s sound fused vintage musical styles with a fresh, modern energy. Named after a nostalgic candy bar, their eclectic octet lineup soon included Don Raleigh, Ken Mosher, Chris Phillips, Tom Maxwell, and Je Widenhouse, creating a rich, dynamic tapestry that resonated widely throughout the South and beyond.

The group’s debut album, "The Inevitable" (1995), laid the groundwork for their breakthrough success with "Hot" (1996). Driven by the catchy single "Hell," the album garnered extensive radio airplay and MTV exposure, ascending to number 27 on the Billboard charts and earning platinum certification. Riding this wave, "Perennial Favorites" (1998) climbed even higher, reaching number 18 and achieving gold status shortly after its release. Alongside these, their festive "Christmas Caravan" (1998) showcased the band’s versatility.

Following the less commercially successful "Bedlam Ballroom" (2000), Squirrel Nut Zippers took an extended hiatus as key members pursued solo projects. Mathus revived the band in 2016 with a new lineup, leading to acclaimed albums like "Beasts of Burgundy" (2018) and "Lost Songs of Doc Souchon" (2020). The latter paid tribute to New Orleans jazz heritage and featured collaborations with former member Andrew Bird. With their enduring blend of swing, jazz, and eclectic roots, Squirrel Nut Zippers remain a unique and influential force in American music history.
