About Jesu

Jesu is the melodic and accessible solo project of Birmingham-born musician and producer Justin Broadrick, a pivotal figure in England’s extreme music scene since the mid-1980s. After the dissolution of his groundbreaking industrial metal band Godflesh in 2002, Broadrick launched Jesu, named after the final track on Godflesh’s album "Hymns." Departing from the harsh industrial sound of his previous work, Jesu’s 2004 self-titled debut showcased a more atmospheric and post-metal approach, marked by cleaner vocals and richly textured guitar riffs.

Over time, Jesu evolved, blending shoegaze, post-punk, and electronic influences into its sound. Releases like "Conqueror" (2007) and "Ascension" (2011) revealed Broadrick’s expanding musical palette, incorporating more conventional song structures while maintaining expansive, ambient layers. Operating primarily as a solo endeavor, Broadrick often handles all instrumentation and vocals himself, although collaborators such as drummer Ted Parsons have contributed to select recordings.

Jesu’s 2004 "Heart Ache" EP demonstrated a sprawling, atmospheric intensity, while the near 50-minute suite on 2009’s "Infinity" highlighted Broadrick’s multi-instrumental talents. Beyond Jesu, Broadrick explored electronic pop and ambient techno as Pale Sketcher, showcasing his versatility within electronic genres. Collaborative projects with artists like Sun Kil Moon resulted in critically acclaimed albums in 2016 and 2017, further expanding Jesu’s reach.

After a period focusing on Godflesh’s reunion and Broadrick’s techno alias JK Flesh, Jesu experienced a creative resurgence with 2020’s experimental full-length "Terminus" and the drone-metal EP "Pity/Piety" (2023). Across nearly two decades, Jesu has earned acclaim for its rich, genre-blending sound that seamlessly bridges industrial metal, shoegaze, and ambient music.
