About Clannad

Clannad, formed in 1970 in County Donegal, Ireland, is a groundbreaking family band known for blending traditional Celtic music with contemporary pop, forging a distinctive sound that has resonated globally. The group’s lineup originally featured siblings Máire (later known as Moya), Ciarán, and Pól Brennan, alongside their uncles Pádraig and Noel Duggan. Starting from performances in their father’s tavern and local folk festivals, Clannad gained international attention after a pivotal tour in Germany in 1975.

Their commercial breakthrough arrived with the haunting theme song "Harry’s Game" (1982), which reached the UK Top Five and earned them an Ivor Novello Award. The band’s soundtrack work further elevated their profile, notably winning a BAFTA for Best Soundtrack in 1985 with the score for the television series *Robin of Sherwood*. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Clannad solidified their crossover appeal with albums such as *Anam* (1990), which entered the Billboard 200, *Banba* (1993), reaching number five in the UK, and *Lore* (1996), securing a Top Ten spot in Ireland. Collaborations with artists like Bono on the 1986 single "In a Lifetime" broadened their audience even further.

In 1998, Clannad won a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album with *Landmarks*, marking a significant career milestone before an extended hiatus. After reuniting in 2013 to release *Nádúr*, their first studio album in 15 years, they toured internationally until lineup changes and the passing of key members—Pádraig in 2016 and Noel Duggan in 2022—brought their journey to a close. Clannad’s final farewell concert took place at London’s Royal Albert Hall in 2024. Their enduring legacy lies in their seamless fusion of Celtic traditions and modern soundscapes, influencing generations of folk and new age musicians worldwide.
